How to get the most out of your hair transplant surgery ?
Whether, you opt for FUHT (strip harvesting) or a BHT (body hair transplant) there are ways you can help get better result for yourself.
1. In body hair transplant it makes sense to use the anagen (i.e. actively growing) hair.
Hair passes through 3 stages in each growth cycle.
(a). Anagen – active growth phase.
(b). Catagen – resting phase.
(c). Telogen – dormant phase.

Using the anagen hair mostly from body donor areas helps hasten the actual growth of the hair once they are transplanted to the scalp. It may also decrease the chances of hair being shed off initially (to go into resting/dormant phase) and then re-growing at a later date. For this, it is advisable that you shave off (do not wax/pluck) the body hair donor area 2-3 days prior to your scheduled body hair transplant procedure. Once you shave off, 2-3 days later, only those hairs would have grown which are in the active growth phase. This way the doctor will be able to choose your anagen (actively growing) hair for the transplant.

Before you shave the body donor areas, please cut a few full length strands of hair from the proposed body donor areas. Tape & label them on plain paper. Bring them along with you when you come for the procedure. This will help the doctor evaluate the characteristics of your body hair.

2. In case you are proceeding with a strip FUHT procedure, your biggest concern would be the width of the strip scar in your donor area. The one factor whereby you can help in making the strip scar really thin is by trying to increase the elasticity of the donor area of your scalp. This can be done by a few simple exercises daily for a few days/week before your hair transplant. You can massage the skin in the donor area i.e. just behind and between both your ears. You can gently roll, pinch or pull the skin to get the benefits. And you can do it at any time of the day. A few days of this massaging has been known to increase the scalp elasticity in the donor area significantly. Increased scalp elasticity helps by reducing the chances of widening of the strip suture line.

3.
If you have any chronic illness like Diabetes, hypertension, metabolic disorders etc., please inform your hair transplant doctor about the same. As long as your illness is well controlled by use of medications, hair transplant can be safely carried out.
Example: You may have been diagnosed to be a Diabetic (and had raised blood sugar levels). If your treating physician has prescribed medications for you and your current blood sugar levels are within normal range, you can proceed with your hair transplant.

Just remember to take your medications in proper dose even on the day of the hair transplant procedure.

4.
If you have any history of hypertrophic scarring or, are prone to keloid scar formation, you must let your hair transplant doctor know about that in advance.

5.
If you have any electronic device placed in your body e.g. pacemaker (for heart disorders), make it a point to tell your hair transplant doctor.

6.
Do tell the doctor (and have it noted on your consultation form) in case you are allergic to any specific medicines.
