What Are Microbes and What Do They Do?

Microbes, also known as microorganisms or bacteria, are commonly thought of as bugs that make us sick. However, our bodies contain trillions of bacteria, the majority of which are beneficial. Microbes actually outnumber our cells ten to one.

The microbiome refers to the array of microbes in our bodies, which includes bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These bugs are beneficial to digestion, immunity, and skin health. The microbiome in our guts may even help us regrow hair in the future but further research is required.

The Microbiome and Hair Regrowth Research:

Both patients with severe digestive disorders in the 2017 study underwent faecal transplantation, which is a surgical procedure in which stool is retrieved from a healthy donor and transferred to a patient's intestinal route. The transplants helped to replenish the healthy bacteria that had been lost in their intestines.

At the time of their transplants, both patients had alopecia universalis, an advanced form of alopecia areata. This hair loss disorder is caused by an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system attacks their hair follicles, causing hair loss. One patient confirmed that hair began to develop on his scalp, ears, and arms eight weeks after the transplant. The same patient's hair continued to grow in these areas three years after the operation. After his transplant, the second patient experienced major hair regrowth on his scalp and body, going from 95-99 percent hair loss to 25-49 percent hair loss.

The body of evidence linking a healthy microbiome to a healthy immune system is developing. Since alopecia universalis, a form of alopecia areata, is an autoimmune disease, it's possible that reintroducing good bacteria to a person's gut might help them regrow hair in the future.

Is Fecal Transplantation a Hair Loss Treatment?

Since this technique is still in its early stages of development, it is not yet available as a hair loss treatment. To see whether fecal transplantation will help with certain forms of hair loss, more research is required.
