Learn more about this exciting new treatment option for patients with limited donor hair supply…

Overview: Body Hair Transplantation

For patients with robust body hair, BHTs (body hair to scalp transplants) increase available donor hair supply. This treatment option is essential for patients with advanced degrees of hair loss and those who lost scalp donor supply due to other reasons.

Hair transplants are all about numbers. The scalp donor area provides a good, but limited resource. Patients with advanced hair loss must tap additional donor resources to achieve satisfying results. By opening up body hair supply, patients have access to vast resouces of previously untapped hair potential.

We have successfuly performed body hair extractions from:

  • Abdomen
  • Armpits/axillary areas
  • Back
  • Back of hand
  • Beard
  • Chest
  • Forearms
  • Legs/calves
  • Thighs
  • Pubic

Dr. A’s clinic firmly believes in using body hair to treat hair loss. Robust Body hair, especially beard hair, is thicker than scalp hair to provide greater coverage. The clinic has developed specialized techniques to harvest hair from almost any area of the body. These techniques are essential when satisfying our patient’s density and quality requirements.

FUSE method allows us to harvest all types of hair including

  • Very curly Negroid hair
  • Very fine Caucasian hair
  • Even hair on the toes is available for transplantation to the balding scalp.

Many patients consider body hair unnecessary and try to remove it. A body hair transplant serves a dual purpose by moving unwanted body hairs to the scalp, where they are more productive. Dr. A’s clinic has transplanted armpit, pubic and leg hair from numerous patients without any side effects. Donor and receiver areas heal back to normal with no visible scarring.

Body hair varies in calibre, texture and color. We recommend mixing body hairs with scalp hair to achieve a uniform look and feel.

Case Study: Topshiny

Patients often ask if body hair should be used alone or as a filler with scalp donor hair. We feel it is dependant on the patient body hair characteristics. One of our patients (username “Topshiny” on message boards) had extensive baldness (NW 6). He opted to go for only body hair grafts. He initially completed a smaller session of 700 body hair grafts (shown above).

After witnessing successful growth in those transplanted body hairs, Topshiny came in for additional procedures.

Case Study: Scalp and Body Hair Patient

Some patients wish to test a small area before undergoing larger procedures. During the first test, this patient transplanted black scalp hair. Six months later he underwent a second test, transplanting black body hair. The blue arrows point to transplanted scalp donor hair. The yellow arrow points to transplanted body donor hair.

Our clinic followed this patient’s progress closely for over 2 years since his BHT. We noticed a cyclical variation in the amount of coverage that the body hairs provided (due to natural body hair growth/resting cycles). Body hairs did grow longer than in their original location, but not as long as scalp donor hair. The color of the transplanted hair has not changed.

Following is another patient who underwent scalp as well as body hair test session transplant. He is happy with the result and has chosen to go for a mix of scalp, body and beard hair for future procedures.

Body hair is a valuable additonal donor supply available to patients. For patients with limited body hair, FUSE techniques will work on facial hair and other areas once thought unattainable by conventional methods. Unlike scalp hair which is weakened by the male hormone DHT, body hair thrives and grows thicker and longer as time goes on

Case Study: Eyebrow Patient

eyebrows

For most people, eyebrow hairs are very fine and straight whereas chest hairs are thick and curly. For these reasons, chest hairs do not qualify for transplantation into the eyebrow region. However, this patient had eyebrow hair that resembled the chest hair more closely than any other.

Guidelines for BHT –
These guidelines are based on our follow up observations in patients.

1. Preshave the body donor areas 3 to 5 days before the extraction. It is a simple step and very helpful to pinpoint the actively growing hair that need to be used.

2. Use only the body donor hair in active growing phase for purpose of transplant. Do not use telogen hair.

3. Assume the transplanted body hair will retain their original characteristics (length, calibre, color, predisposition to greying, curl, anagen/telogen %ages and hair growth cycles).

4. Factor in the impact of growth cycles and characteristics of the body donor hair proposed to be transplanted.

5. Mix the various body as well as scalp donor hair in any particular area of scalp.
